In 1792, under George Vancouver’s expedition, Vice-Admiral Sir Alan Gardner surveyed the waters around Camano Island, WA. During a formal ceremony in which the region was claimed for Britain, the water to the west of Camano Island was named Port Gardner. Today, this area is called Saratoga Passage. The body of water to the east of Camano Island was named Port Susan, in honor of Lady Susan, Sir Alan’s wife.
My little painting named “Lady Susan” is a view from Camano Island looking across Port Susan to Warm Beach and the town of Stanwood. This is painted in acrylic on a 6”X6”X2” deep cradled gesso panel. Because of the cradled panel, this small painting is able to be wall hung or placed on a flat surface.
